Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence occurs when a man is unable to get and keep an erection firm enough for intercourse. Worldwide, an estimated 52% of men suffer from ED. In Malaysia, an estimated 60% of men are affected by ED.[1]

How does the metabolic syndrome cause ED? [4]

The metabolic syndrome is made up of conditions such as high blood sugar levels, high cholesterol, abdominal obesity and damaged blood vessels. Studies show that men with the metabolic syndrome are two times more likely to suffer from ED. 

Getting diagnosed 

It is important that men get their ED diagnosed because it can be caused by a large range of issues. ED has been linked with heart disease, diabetes and other conditions.4 Diagnosis of ED includes5: 

  • Physical examination 
  • Blood tests 
  • Urine analysis 
  • Ultrasound 
  • Psychological exam
