OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of joint disease, affecting more than 251 million people globally as according to the Global Burden, making it the second largest cause of disability worldwide. In Malaysia, there is 10-20% of the elderly populations are diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

Pain killer is one of the common medications prescribed by the doctors for symptom management. However, pain killer such as the non-selective anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) will increase the risk of gastric discomfort (such as ulcer, bleeding, inflammation); whereas selective anti-inflammatory drugs might increase risk of cardiovascular disease in long term.

Other types of treatment include taking supplements and using knee guard to support the joints.
Supplements that you may consider:

1️⃣ Glucosamine
It is a natural component present in healthy cartilage. It involved in stimulating proteoglycans synthesis and decrease activity of the enzymes that breakdown the cartilage lining.

2️⃣ Chondroitin
It helps to inhibit the enzymes that decompose the joint cartilage and speeds up the formation of a new joint cartilage.

3️⃣ MSM
It helps body to reduce inflammation and reduce joint degradation.

4️⃣ Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II)
Research shows that it reduces circulating levels of inflammatory cytokines, potentially serving to decrease both the incidence and the severity of arthritis.

5️⃣ Hyaluronic acid
It is the main component in the synovial fluid. It increases the viscosity of synovial fluid and reduces the friction between the joint surface.

6️⃣ Turmeric
It is anti-inflammatory which inhibits the release of inflammatory cytokines. It has been used as traditional medicine for joint pain and another ailment.
